A Symposium on Knowledge Sources of Indian Cultural Tradition was organized by INTACH, Madurai Chapter, jointly with the Madurai Kamaraj University on the 8th of February, 2023. Prof. Dr. B. Nalini, organizer of the symposium, in her introductory speech explained that the aim of the symposium was to familiarize the younger generation with the traditional Indian knowledge systems and also the great sages who bequeathed these treasures of knowledge to us. The names, ideas and the concepts associated with our traditional culture must be explained to youngsters so that they will be able to recollect, revive and preserve them. By spreading this knowledge we will rejuvenate the conversation around our rich culture. The traditional heritage of India is an incomparable treasure trove of knowledge and expertise, it’s greatness has to be communicated to the common man in innovative ways for the wisdom embedded in it to be preserved and cherished.
Prof. Dr. J. Shanmugaraja, Assistant Professor, Department of Modern History, School of Historical Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, spoke on the Sapta Rishis who excelled in various arts, having imbibed the knowledge firsthand from the foremost Guru Aadhi Shivan Himself, who is believed to have lived in the Himalayas. Their contribution to our traditional knowledge systems, he reiterated, is incomprehensibly huge. He also spoke about the Sage Agastya who is regarded as the Father of Siddha medicine.
Prof. S.A.V. Elanchelian and Prof. Santhana Iyyappa Sundararaj of Architecture Department of Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, spoke on micro-aesthetics in Pallava architecture, and the latter elaborated on traditional farming methods abounding with nature-based solutions. Prof. Dr. Elanchelian elaborated on the superior nature of the art of sculpture in India especially that which was patronized by the Cholas and the Pallavas. Prof. Ar. Santhana Iyyappan inspired the audience by providing interesting insights on traditional farming methods that provide eco-friendly solutions to the usage of water for home gardening.
Prof. Dr. Buvaneswaran, Principal of the Madurai Kamaraj University College gave the valedictory address. INTACH convenor Mr. Rajesh Kanna welcomed the gathering, co-convenor Mrs. Vani Chenkuttuvan introduced the speakers and the Treasurer Mrs.Shanthi proposed the vote of thanks. The symposium had a good reach among the students and the public.
